Pilot 3: Increasing last mile transport efficiency in London
The food retailing sector is experiencing rapid growth with customers ordering online for home delivery or collection from a ‘pick up’ point. The general trend for consumers is a regular large shop, increasingly utilising home delivery as the preferred fulfilment method with top up shops from a range of convenience stores.
The focus of this pilot is to define the scope and scale of the home delivery market for food and grocery products in London. Using that intelligence we are researching new food logistics solutions including collaborative initiatives in traditional home delivery supply chains and the opportunities for new fulfilment models.
Objective In-depth analyses will be carried out to establish the overall market size and service profiles for the London area using both retailer specific data and simulation from general data.
Using this data, the partners are able to model and evaluate the impact of collaborative logistics for food retailers in London. Examples of measures that will be evaluated include:
Average distance per order
Average driving time per route
Maximum number of routes required to satisfy demand
The utilisation of the fleet
The impacts / benefits of collaborative supply chains
The use of new models including micro hubs to build a more sustainable supply chain approach
